SCADA: The automation tool

Supervisory Control and Data acquisition is a platform where the equipment and the interface machines are monitored with their activities of operations. This system helps in monitoring the actual operations without the involvement of manual existence and data collection. The data is acquired and is stored in a systematic date tagged for informing the activity observations which occur in its continuous operations.

This technology has evolved into a very useful platform in monitoring the data an simulations and relevant data and information where you have numerous tagged entities performing their individual tasks.

This tool has a Human Machine Interface, where the monitoring of the data can be done. Usually, the data is transferred with the help of the Remote Transmission Units ( RTU). The data is deposited to the monitoring stations at backup storage which can be motivated to have control over the functions of the machines. The technology can be interfaced with the Radio frequencies as well which can produce efficient control with its own dedicated frequency band for operation with least disturbance.

SCADA systems can play the role of supervision and also can be modified into a control platform where the individual machine element can be sent feedback for its operations.  Error and malfunctioning details can be easily accumulated at later stages it can analyze the data and finally reach an automation stage responding to various small interpretations reducing the human involvement in resolving such adjustments. This technological platform is already in use in industries related to energy, oil and gas water, and so on.

There are a few limitations that have been seen in the case of security of the units in data access which is normally optimized by introducing a strong firewall setup.

We hope, this was helpful in understanding the basics and the fundamental working of the SCADA based automation systems. Please feel free to drop a comment for any query you happen to face.
